Twenty years of presence on the New York musical scene, a running contract with the prestigous Blue Note Record and prebious performances alongside legends such as John Zorn, Iggy Pop or John Scofield (to name a few) are just some of the crucial parts that when joined together form the living legend of Medeski, Martin & Wood.
It would be difficult to find and name another jazz trio that has so successfully broken out of the ghetto of devoted jazz fans and reached, with their music, those who in everyday life tend to avoid jazz in general. The true strenght of Medeski, Martin & Wood lies in their capability and willingness to break music boundries and real talent for writting songs with melodies that simply get to you, even if your’re a modern, brought up on mainstream radio chaos, listener. The New York trio freely combines music and ideas taken from the late 70’s like the funk and soul sounds,whilst venturing into the world of jazz-rock fusion. Important is that the outcome of such combinations with a genuine love for contemporary hip-hop rhythms and extended improvs which often spread out into hipnotizing, trans like tunes.
Over a prediod of 20 years Medeski, Martin & Wood have created their own, individual sound. Credit for that surely goes to John Medeski, who has prooved over and over again, that he’s not affraid any instrument with keys. Make it a classical pianoforte, a hippie era Hammond keys or even the so forgotten clavinet, whatever John Medeski plays on, he will definitely make it his own and create the so familiar, Medeski like, groove.
Each Medeski, Martin & Wood live show is several dozen minutes of well thought through and precisley conducted stage madness. It’s a musical voyage through styles and genders one would never consider close or similiar to each other. The trio’s incredible musical skills allow them to jump from accoustic techno played only with a double bass and two piano keys to a completely atonal parts which bring to mind the biggest names of free-jazz avant-garde: Ornette Coleman or Eric Dolphy. Despite working together for over 2 decades, the trio still continues their search for new ways of musical expression. That urge has led them to include classical tango marked by Astor Piazzola as well punk songs made by The Stooges into their repertoire. MMW’s musical gender portfolio seems endless and is only confirmed by their every official release.
It comes without surprise that nowadays Medeski, Martin & Wood are widely considered to be the most important nu-jazz and nu-soul bands and the most important instigators of the entire gender which brought you Menahen Street Band or El Michels Affair.
Wanting to celebrate the founding of Jazz Club Hipnoza in Katowice, we continue to invite, to our concerts, bands and formations that join, in their music, different traditions and roots, in order to create a very modern music which is filled with dance floor energy and original ideas. That’s why we could not have forgotten the true classics - Medeski, Martin & Wood who are the next big act invited to play in Poland as part of the Before Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival 2012 series of live music events taking part in different cities.
The Medeski, Martin & Wood Before TNM 2012 will take place in Teatr Rozrywki in Chorzow, Poland on the 22nd of April. This will be MMW’a first appearance in the Upper Silesian Region and the trio will perform a musical retrospective selected from the 2 decades of their stage presence.
We hope that this live performance will get you in the right mood before the TNM Festival in August, when all of the stages set up across the New Silesian Museum Grounds in Katowice will be taken over by dozens of artists that in one way or another refer to musical achievements of this legendary jazz supergroup.
Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival 2012 will take place from 23rd to 26th of August in Katowice.
